Sheffield strengthens its green credentials by retaining Tree City of the World
status.
Sheffield has once again been awarded ‘Tree City of the World’ status by the Arbor Day
Foundation, in recognition of our ongoing commitment to urban forestry and environmental
sustainability.
Achieving Tree City of the World status brings many benefits to Sheffield, from enhancing
our city’s aesthetic appeal, to solidifying our reputation as the ‘Green City’. And urban trees
provide us with many benefits, from improving air quality and mitigating flooding risk to
providing shade in summer and habitats for our local wildlife.
Globally, 210 cities were awarded Tree City of the World status during 2024, with 27 of those
being in the UK, including Leeds and Doncaster. Collectively, the 210 cities planted and
cared for more than 3 million trees within their communities during 2024.
Tree City of the World status is awarded in retrospect, based on achievements rather than
commitments, and our recent award is in recognition of the work undertaken during 2024.
As we celebrate this achievement, Sheffield remains committed to continuing to manage our
urban forest for current and future generations to enjoy and benefit from. Throughout the
year we plan to host community events, tree planting days and workshops, so that together
we can all benefit from a greener city.
