Exciting new plan for Darnall

The Sheffield Street Tree Partnership is excited to announce the launch of a project to plant 200 new street trees within the Darnall area.

With the help of students from Sheffield University Planning Department and the Sheffield Street Tree Wardens, surveys have already been undertaken within the Darnall area and 32 suitable locations have been identified on Staniforth road.  More surveys are planned throughout February and March, with the aim of increasing this total to at least 200.

The Darnall area has one of the lowest canopy covers in the city, with very few street trees compared to more suburban areas like Crosspool and Fulwood.  SSTP is keen to prioritise schemes, like the current one being developed, which address such inequalities that everyone has the chance to enjoy the benefits of street trees.

When choosing which species are going to be suitable for this urban location, many characteristics will be considered, such as size at maturity, drought and stress tolerance, and the species of other trees that may be present in the area.

Street trees can bring many benefits to an area including reducing summer temperatures, reducing air-borne pollution, increased feelings of wellbeing and supporting local wildlife.

Other wider environmental benefits include carbon removal and sequestration and diversion of surface water run-off, which can help reduce the impact of potential flooding.

So as we move forward with our plans we’ll continue to engage with the local community so that we can deliver a project that will bring the greatest benefits to everyone living and working in the area.
